We’ve mentioned how we use our pressure washer to revive various things around the house – like outdoor furniture and even an indoor rug – but we still hear from people who fear that it’s complicated to set up or expensive to buy or hard to control… and the good news is that it’s none of those things. So this post is a comprehensive start-to-finish guide for anyone who’s finally ready to get their pressure washing feet wet (maybe even literally).

Pressure washing is an easy, affordable, and TOTALLY AWESOME way to keep your outdoor spaces looking fresh. So I’m walking you through everything from setting it up and turning it on, to where and how we use ours. It makes such an insane difference every spring, I’d even call it a DIY VIP.

We were a bit intimidated the first time we tried pressure washing nearly 10 years ago.

How We Painted Our Ikea Kitchen Cabinets https://www.younghouselove.com/how-to-paint-ikea-kitchen-cabinets/ Tue, 29 Mar 2022 15:10:00 +0000 https://www.younghouselove.com/?p=102197 How We Painted Our Ikea Kitchen Cabinets

We’ve painted kitchen cabinets before. We’ve done Ikea kitchen cabinets before. But painting Ikea kitchen cabinets was a new combo move for us. And despite a nagging voice in our heads that asked if it was a bad idea (paint laminate? or slick factory finished cabinets?! can that even be durable?! ), we’re extremely happy with the final result. Plus, it was pretty easy to do – no paint sprayer or fancy equipment necessary!

We’re about a month into using them every day and so far they’re holding up wonderfully. They’ve been scratched, scrubbed, kicked, and real-life tested by two kids and so far no scrapes, dings, or dents to report. They look as good as the day we freshly painted them, and as smooth as factory-made Ikea cabinets – so we’ll share how we got such even coverage.

Our Smart Blinds: Your Questions Answered https://www.younghouselove.com/smart-blinds-shades-faq/ Mon, 14 Mar 2022 15:43:47 +0000 https://www.younghouselove.com/?p=101936 Our Smart Blinds: Your Questions Answered

So last month I wrote a post about the smart tech we added, ditched, and love most in our house. And in it I mentioned that I’d share a detailed smart blind post for you “in a few days” because they’re hands down one of my favorite smart home features that we’ve added. Apparently I overshot that deadline just a smidge, but better late than never. So let’s dive into where we got them, why we chose them, how they’re powered, the upsides & downsides, and – of course – how much they cost (please note that I cannot explain why I insist on calling them “blinds” when they’re technically roller shades).

Let’s start with the question I heard most from Sherry (as I mentioned in my last post, she was very reluctant but has completely come over to the smart-blind-dark-side – er, bright side?

The Smart Home Tech We’ve Added, Ditched, And Still Love Most https://www.younghouselove.com/must-have-smart-home-devices/ Thu, 17 Feb 2022 21:51:36 +0000 https://www.younghouselove.com/?p=101947 The Smart Home Tech We’ve Added, Ditched, And Still Love Most

It has been almost 4 years since we last detailed the ways we use smart home technology to make our household more efficient. Since then we’ve changed homes, states, and even our smart home systems. So today I thought I’d break down what we’ve added, what we’ve gotten rid of, and what still has a stranglehold on my nerdy tech-loving heart (and even one that was Sherry’s idea!).

As usual, none of the products mentioned in this post are sponsored or gifted. It’s just stuff that we have bought and loved – or (in some cases) don’t love so much anymore. So let’s get into it.

STILL LOVE: Alexa Voice Assistant

Call us basic, but our Alexa voice-assistant devices are basically the couldn’t-live-without matriarch of our little smart home family. The Abuela to our Encanto. And, despite having downsized to a smaller home, we actually upsized the number of devices: going from 1 Amazon Echo and 2 Echo Dots in our last house to 2 Echos (for the upstairs and downstairs common areas) and 3 Dots (one for each bedroom).

Our New Kitchen Porch https://www.younghouselove.com/kitchen-porch-with-grill/ Mon, 29 Nov 2021 22:36:35 +0000 https://www.younghouselove.com/?p=97804 Our New Kitchen Porch

Finally took the photos and videos for this post and I can’t wait to share it because it changed our house in such a major way. Introducing… the area that we affectionately call our kitchen porch. Aka: the grillin’ spot with all the greenery.

grill | outdoor table | outdoor stacking chairs | large white planter

If you followed along on Instagram Stories for the last few months, essentially this side porch always existed, but after we closed off doors number 7 and 8 from our bedroom which led out here (yes our bedroom had 8 exterior doors & still has 6 of them – more on that here), it was just a floating porch without any door leading to it. Here’s an old photo to show you what we essentially were starting with (this is after the exterior stairs came down from the upper deck, but before we painted the house, got new railings, etc, etc).

9 Ways We Made The Most Of Our Small Kitchen https://www.younghouselove.com/small-kitchen-pantry-updates/ Mon, 20 Sep 2021 18:37:49 +0000 https://www.younghouselove.com/?p=97474 9 Ways We Made The Most Of Our Small Kitchen

“We just couldn’t figure out why you weren’t tearing out the kitchen.”

That’s what one of our contractor’s guys said to us right as we moved in last year. I understood his confusion. We were redoing floors, moving doors, vaulting ceilings, etc – but we left the small old kitchen relatively untouched – complete with mauve laminate countertops. You can see what I mean in this post.

But to know us is to know that we strongly prefer to live with an expensive-to-renovate room like a kitchen first, just so we don’t rush into spending major money on big permanent changes that we might later regret or wish that we thought through a little longer. So we spent the last 16 months debating various big ideas for this room, all while peppering in some simple smaller updates to get a feel for how they help improve the space and what we might want for our more long-term plan.

Putting In A Pool: The Process, The Cost, and All The Before & After Photos https://www.younghouselove.com/putting-in-a-pool-small-backyard/ Wed, 18 Aug 2021 18:30:00 +0000 https://www.younghouselove.com/?p=97146 Putting In A Pool: The Process, The Cost, and All The Before & After Photos

It’s been a full year in the making, but OUR POOL IS DONE*! Here’s where I imagine someone saying “and the crowd goes wiiiiild” (and the crowd, in this case, is the five members of our household – including Burger shaking a tiny pom-pom). Today we’ve got one HUGE post full of info about the entire process, the budget, and, of course, the finished result. We’re also answering some of the most common questions we got throughout this project.

*Well, mostly done. More on that later

towels / hooks / wall scuppers / chair / drum stool / sconce / doorknob / tan pots / white pot / lounge chairs / solar path lights

Neither of us have ever lived in a house with a pool or even in an area of the country where residential pools are very common.

Before & After Photos: 14 Months In! https://www.younghouselove.com/before-after-photos-14-months-in/ Fri, 23 Jul 2021 16:59:53 +0000 https://www.younghouselove.com/?p=97039 Before & After Photos: 14 Months In!

Note: This post was born from an updated Before & After page that we heard people were having trouble finding (since it wasn’t at the top of our blog feed). So here it is, forever immortalized as a chronological post. And now, since we’ll continue to update our Before & After page over time, we have this post frozen in time, which is nice to look back on. Wish we had done it around 6 months in and at the year mark too.

We downsized to this 1,400 square foot house in Northwest Florida on May of 2020 after a fast, furious, and long-distance three-month renovation. You can read more about how we found ourselves craving a pared-down lifestyle for our family here and here (that last one is a really good synopsis of what led us to this exact spot).
